垣ノ島遺跡
4.1Est. 120Hakodate, Hokkaido
UNESCO World Heritage Site
The settlement site itself offers sweeping Pacific coast views. The key artifacts, however, are in the adjacent Hakodate Jomon Culture Center. Look for the world's oldest lacquerware and the Hollow Clay Figure; its legs bear finely stamped patterns. A clear morning gives you the best light for the coast.
Local tips
The Hollow Clay Figure (National Treasure) in the museum is stunningly detailed; look closely at the intricate patterns stamped into its legs.
