The 20-meter Kakemaku Falls is the highest waterfall in Kikuchi Gorge.
Highest waterfall in Kikuchi Gorge, dropping 20 meters over a cliff face. You can view it from the bridge directly above or from a small platform underneath, with spray reaching both vantage points. Under the right light conditions, a rainbow forms in the mist. The name means 'lowered curtain,' a reference to how the water conceals the cliff behind it. The volcanic rock in the gorge contains vertical fissures formed when superheated matter met cool air during ancient eruptions. Over time, water penetrates these cracks and causes blocks to break away, creating the sheer drops that define Kikuchi Gorge.
