霞城公園
Urban park around a restored castle, with sports facilities, a kids' playground & a history museum.
Kajo Park occupies the grounds of the former Yamagata Castle, one of the largest flatland castles in the Tohoku region, with partially restored stone walls and a reconstructed East Gate that evokes the fortress's Edo-period grandeur. The park is one of Yamagata's top cherry blossom destinations, with roughly 1,500 trees creating a spectacular canopy from mid to late April, when evening illuminations draw large crowds. Beyond the blossoms, the spacious grounds include the Yamagata Prefectural Museum, sports facilities, a playground, and pleasant walking paths around the inner moat. The park hosts a vibrant autumn chrysanthemum festival as well, making it a year-round destination for locals and visitors alike.
