Kajikaen Art Gallery

Built in 1925 on the north bank of the Tama River, Kajikaen began as a ryokan and has been repurposed as an art gallery displaying the current owner's collection of Edo and Meiji period ceramics and artworks. All 18 former guest rooms are now galleries, each fitted with period furniture, ikebana arrangements, and views toward the river. The sukiya-zukuri interiors, with their tokonoma alcoves, carved cedar transom panels, and staggered display shelves, are as interesting as the collection itself. The former bathhouse hosts contemporary art exhibitions. Kajikaen is a National Tangible Cultural Property, open Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with an admission fee of 800 yen.
