Kaikyō Plaza
shopping
Two-building harbor complex with Mojiko's yaki-curry restaurants, banana sweets, and Kanmon Strait views.
A pair of low waterfront buildings facing the Kanmon Strait, holding most of Mojiko's yaki-curry specialists, the banana sweets shops that turned the port's monkey-import history into a tourism brand, and a small ferry terminal for the five-minute crossing to Shimonoseki. The yaki-curry (oven-baked curry rice with a cheese crust) was invented at one of the Mojiko cafes in the 1950s and is now the city's signature dish; expect a wait at the most-photographed shops between 11:30 and 1:30. The plaza's outdoor terrace is the best place in town to watch the strait traffic at sunset.
Bear Fruits and Princess Pipi are the two most famous yaki-curry shops; both take queue tickets at the door from 11:00. The ferry to Shimonoseki runs every twenty minutes and costs 400 yen one way.
