Kaikokan Historic House
懐古館 (古民家)
Overview
Built in 1820 for the Iida family, village officials of the Kaga domain, this large thatched farmhouse now operates as a folk museum at the base of Mt. Jo near the site of Nanao Castle. The interior retains original features including a sunken hearth with a hanging cooking hook, carved transoms depicting famous landscapes, and folding screen decorations. Household artifacts and artworks from the Iida family are on display throughout. The room used for formal entertaining overlooks a landscaped garden with mossy stones and a well. Inside, a large painting depicts daimyo Uesugi Kenshin composing a poem after capturing Nanao Castle in 1577. Closed Mondays and mid-December to mid-March.
