Kaike Onsen is a natural hot-spring resort that occupies a beautiful stretch of beach-lined seafront about 15 minutes by car from central Yonago.
Kaike Onsen sits along a stretch of coastline 15 minutes from central Yonago, where the hot spring was discovered in 1900 after a fisherman noticed bubbles rising from the sand. About 20 inns and resort hotels now line the seafront, offering day and overnight access to baths and beach swimming in the same place, which is rare in Japan. Kaike is also the birthplace of the Japanese triathlon: facilities for open-water swimming, cycling, and running have been here since 1981, attracting Olympic athletes to train on the Yumigahama Cycling Course that runs 16 kilometers west to Sakaiminato. Stand-up paddleboarding and sea kayaking are also popular.
Wash thoroughly at the shower stations before entering the bath. This is non-negotiable etiquette. Bring a small towel but keep it out of the water.
