Shopping district with Edo-period roots as a geisha neighborhood, a few surviving houses still stand today.
Flourishing geisha district in the Edo period, and the cobblestone alleys branching off the main hillside slope still hold a few traditional geisha houses alongside intimate bars, galleries, and craft shops. French restaurants and patisseries have a particularly strong presence here, a legacy of the French community that settled in the neighborhood, earning it the informal nickname Little Paris. The main street hosts the annual Awa Odori festival in July, when the street fills with dancers from neighboring Tokushima. The area's layered character, Edo-period atmosphere, French kitchens, and quiet yokocho lanes rewards walking without a fixed plan.
