Juichimen Kannon
観世音寺十一面観音菩薩
Overview
The bodhisattva Kannon is the goddess of mercy and compassion.
Housed in the Treasure Hall at Kanzeonji Temple in Fukuoka, this 103-centimeter wooden statue is the smallest of the hall's sculptures and dates to the 13th century. It depicts Juichimen Kannon, the eleven-headed form of the bodhisattva of mercy, with ten small heads arranged above the main face so that suffering can be perceived in all directions simultaneously. The Treasure House holds several forms of Kannon alongside other significant Buddhist figures, making it a worthwhile stop for anyone interested in Buddhist sculpture. The quiet temple grounds and the concentration of fine works in the collection reward a slower, considered visit.
