Jufukuji Temple
temple
寿福寺
Kamakura's oldest Zen temple with a hauntingly beautiful moss-lined approach that few visitors discover.
Founded in 1200 at the request of Masako Hojo, Jufukuji ranks third among Kamakura's Five Mountains yet its inner grounds remain closed to the public, preserving an air of mystery. What draws those who know is the approach path, a long, straight walkway flanked by ancient trees and carpeted in moss. At the rear, rock-carved caves hold the graves of Masako Hojo and her son Sanetomo.
After rain, the moss on the approach path glows an almost fluorescent green. Bring a camera with manual focus for the best shots.
