Onsen town in the Toyohira river valley one hour southwest of central Sapporo, in Shikotsu-Toya National Park, with the Hoheikyo dam, the Iwato Kannon cave temple, and the Sapporo Kokusai ski resort all within 30 minutes.
Jozankei sits in the Toyohira river valley between high cliffs, an hour by city bus from JR Sapporo Station. The hot-spring town was opened in 1866 by the monk Miizumi Jozan and now holds about a dozen ryokan plus several day-use baths. Beyond the village, the 102-meter Hoheikyo Dam fills a deep gorge with autumn foliage; the Iwato Kannon cave temple in town shelters 33 stone Kannon statues; Sapporo Kokusai Ski Resort runs from the ridge above through winter. Jozan Gensen Park has free public foot baths and steam vents in the village center.
