Overview

A red suspension bridge over a gorge with a hidden waterfall trail and the mystical Kappa Pool, deep in Sapporo's onsen valley.

Strung across the Toyohira River gorge in the Jozankei hot spring district, this photogenic red bridge leads to a forest trail passing the Futami Iwa rocks and a small hydroelectric waterfall. Hokkaido's oldest still-operating power station. Below the bridge, the turquoise Kappa Pool is said to be inhabited by the mythical water spirits. The trail is short but dramatic, and rarely crowded even in peak autumn.

Local tips

Continue past the bridge to the small waterfall fed by the old power station. In autumn, the reflection of red maples on the still water below is spectacular.
