Joshin’etsukogen National Park was established in 1949.
Established in 1949, Joshin'etsukogen National Park spans 148,194 hectares across Gunma, Niigata, and Nagano. The park ranges from Mt. Asama in the south to Mt. Naeba in the north, taking in crater lakes, wetlands, highlands, and multiple hot spring areas. In the northeast, the Tanigawa Mountain Range straddles the Gunma-Niigata border. Glacial erosion over millions of years carved the range's steep, craggy faces into characteristic U-shaped valleys. Mt. Tanigawadake at 1,977 meters draws hikers and rock climbers; a ropeway built in 1960 and upgraded since connects the foothills to the ridge at Tenjindaira, giving access to the upper terrain without a full ascent.
