Overview

A hillside temple with stunning Kamakura-period Buddhist sculptures and a cliff-top viewpoint over the city.

Founded in 1251 and patronized by the Hojo regents, Jokomyoji preserves an important Amitabha Triad sculpture (Important Cultural Property) viewable on select days. The real surprise is the hillside behind the main hall, stone steps climb to a natural terrace offering a sweeping vista over Kamakura's temple-dotted valleys. In autumn, the temple garden blazes with red spider lilies.

Local tips

The hilltop viewpoint is accessible year-round but the Amitabha sculptures are only shown Thursday-Sunday. Plan accordingly if the art matters to you.
