Jojakko-ji Temple

常寂光寺

4.6Est. 90Kyoto, Kansai

Overview

Wall-less hillside temple near Arashiyama with a 1620 pagoda and panoramic city views.

Perched on the slopes of Mount Ogura in Saga, this "temple with no walls" was founded in the late 16th century and features a two-story pagoda from 1620 with panoramic views of Kyoto city. Hillside gardens cascade with cherry blossoms in spring and fiery maple canopies in autumn, all remarkably quiet despite being a short walk from the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. The mossy stone paths wind steeply uphill through layers of dense forest.
