Jodoin Temple, Rakando Hall, Funanori Kannon

Jodoin is a sub-temple of Byodoin in Uji, completed in the 15th century with funds from the priest Eiku during an earlier renovation of the main complex. The Rakando Hall, built by the tea master Hoshino Dosai in 1640 and restored in 2015, displays sculptures of Buddhist arhats alongside a ceiling painting of a dragon and mythical creatures on the walls. The temple also houses a figure of Kannon sailing a small boat across a turbulent sea, a devotional image for those seeking safe passage. The original was stolen after World War II; the current version was completed in 2003 to mark Byodoin's 950th anniversary.
