Overview

Joanji Temple was originally named Daifukuji Temple.

Family temple of the Kuki clan, powerful naval lords of the Toba region. When Kuki Moritaka rebuilt it in 1607, he installed a stone lantern and other objects to honor his father Yoshitaka, who had committed ritual suicide after supporting the losing side at the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600. Father and son had fought for opposite factions and afterward carried different family crests, and a commemorative plaque on the grounds displays both. The blade Yoshitaka used is stored here, alongside his portrait and a scroll recording his deeds. The Kuki family mausoleum sits directly behind the temple building.
