Overview
A legendary basement izakaya since 1963 where charcoal-grilled kinki rockfish and local sake draw a devoted local crowd.
Hidden in a Kokubuncho basement near Jozenji-dori, Jiraiya has been serving Sendai's most discerning drinkers for over 60 years. The specialty is whole kinki (thornyhead rockfish) grilled slowly over charcoal, paired with a curated selection of Miyagi sake. The counter seats offer prime viewing of the grill master at work, and the atmosphere is pure old-school Sendai, no English menu, no tourist polish.
Local tips
Ask for the counter seats facing the charcoal grill and order the kinki ichimono (whole grilled rockfish). It takes 40 minutes to prepare so order it first.
