Jinya-mae Morning Market
market
陣屋前朝市
A small daily farmers' market in front of the historic magistrate's office, selling mountain vegetables and local pickles.
Every morning, local farmers and craftspeople set up stalls in the small plaza before the Takayama Jinya (the only surviving Edo-period provincial magistrate's office). The market specializes in mountain vegetables, homemade miso, local pickles (tsukemono), dried persimmons, and handmade crafts. It's smaller and more intimate than the Miyagawa market across town, and the vendors are predominantly elderly farmers who have been trading here for decades.
Buy the obachan's homemade akakabu (red turnip) pickles. They're a Hida specialty you won't find outside the region, and each grandmother's recipe is slightly different.
