Overview
A mountain temple reached by 400 stone steps, famous for throwing clay discs off a cliff for good luck.
Perched in the forested hills of Takao northwest of Kyoto, Jingo-ji requires a climb of roughly 400 stone steps through towering cedars. At the temple's lookout point, visitors throw lightweight kawarake clay discs off the cliff into the valley below, a uniquely physical form of prayer. The autumn foliage here rivals Tofuku-ji but draws a fraction of visitors.
Local tips
Throw your kawarake disc with a flick of the wrist. Locals say if it catches an updraft and soars, your wish is granted.
