25 traditional houses with steep thatched roofs from eastern Japan, near the Fujiko F. Fujio Museum.
The Japan Open-Air Folk House Museum in Kawasaki preserves 25 traditional farmhouses and dwellings relocated from across Japan to a hillside park in Ikuta Ryokuchi. The houses display the characteristic steep thatched roofs of different regions, from the gassho-zukuri style of Shirakawa-go to the magariya L-shaped farmhouses of Tohoku, each furnished with period tools and household items. Walking the forested paths between the buildings provides a compressed tour of Japan's rural architectural heritage, with volunteer guides available to explain the regional differences and construction techniques. Seasonal events include indigo dyeing workshops and mochi-pounding demonstrations. The museum's open-air setting on a wooded hillside makes it especially atmospheric in autumn and during light-up events.
