Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) Kure Museum

Known locally as the Tetsu no Kujira-kan, or Iron Whale Museum, this facility in Kure focuses on the history of Japan's minesweeping operations and the technology behind them. The centerpiece is the submarine Akishio, a decommissioned 2,400-ton vessel that visitors can board and walk through from bow to stern. The interior is tight and practical, and the experience of moving through the crew quarters, engine room, and control center gives a clear sense of what submarine service involves. Displays cover mine countermeasure technology and the history of the Maritime Self-Defense Force. The museum is free to enter and sits directly opposite the Yamato Museum, making the two a natural pairing.
