Local Pick
Overview
A hidden cluster of Meiji-era Western buildings where American teachers shaped modern Kumamoto's education.
Captain Leroy Janes came to Kumamoto in 1871 and taught at the Kumamoto Western School, influencing an entire generation. His preserved wooden residence and the nearby Former Fifth High School (attended by novelist Soseki Natsume) form a quiet walking route through Kumamoto's lesser-known Meiji architectural heritage.
Local tips
Combine with Suizenji Garden next door for a full morning. The Former Fifth High School building across the road has free entry.
