Izushi Castle was completed in 1604 at the base of Mt. Ariko and largely demolished after the Tokugawa era ended in 1868. A corner tower was reconstructed in 1968, and the Tojo gate and bridge followed in 1994, with the original stone walls and moat still in place. The castle site sits on a hill with views over the town's historic grid of streets below. Within the grounds, a flight of stone steps passes through about 40 red torii gates leading up to Arikoyama Inari Shrine, where ancient trees shade a quiet hilltop that also serves as an elevated lookout point over Izushi's centuries-old castle town layout.
