Izumo Hinomisaki Lighthouse
landmark
出雲日御碕灯台
Japan's tallest stone lighthouse at 43.65 meters from 1903, still active beacon with panoramic Sea of Japan views.
Built in 1903, Hinomisaki Lighthouse stands on the rocky headland west of Izumo and is the tallest stone lighthouse in Japan at 43 meters. Climbing the 163 internal steps brings you to an observation platform with views across the Sea of Japan and back along the coast toward Izumo. The lighthouse is still operational, and on quiet days the sound of the ocean against the basalt cliffs below carries up clearly. The surrounding area includes a small beach and a path along the clifftops. It pairs naturally with a visit to the nearby Hinomisaki Shrine, one of the oldest in the region, making a good combined half-day from Izumo city.
