Overview

Izumibo Hall at the Shokado Garden in Yawata preserves three architectural elements from a Buddhist temple that once stood within the Iwashimizu Hachimangu shrine-temple complex on Mt. Otokoyama: the main room, anteroom, and entranceway. According to tradition, the entranceway was originally part of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Fushimi Castle, and the paulownia crests carved into its doors still mark it as his. When the Meiji government ordered the separation of Shinto and Buddhist structures in 1868, all Buddhist buildings were removed from the mountain. These three elements were carefully preserved and later incorporated here. All three are registered Cultural Properties of Kyoto Prefecture, and the early 17th-century interior decor of the main room remains largely intact.

Local tips
