Overview

Tranquil island preserving Ryukyu heritage where King Sho En's birthplace features ancient stone walls and sacred sites.

Small inhabited island in the northern part of the East China Sea, reachable by ferry from Nago in about two hours. The island covers around 15 square kilometers and has a mixed landscape of low mountains, sugarcane farms, and sandy beaches on the southern and eastern shores. It is quiet by Okinawa standards, with no resort infrastructure, and the pace of the island reflects its working fishing and farming community. Visitors who make the trip typically come for the uncrowded beaches, cycling the coastal road, or visiting the historic sites connected to the Ryukyu Kingdom. The ferry schedule limits day trips, so staying overnight gives more time to explore.
