Iwato Kannondo
temple
岩戸観音堂
Cave temple in central Jozankei built into a 120-meter rock tunnel, with 33 stone Kannon statues placed at intervals along the passage.
Iwato Kannondo was opened in 1939 to honor road workers who died building the tunnel that brought traffic into Jozankei. The temple's main feature is the cave passage itself, 120 meters long and lit by recessed alcove lights, with 33 stone Kannon (Buddhist deity of compassion) statues set at regular intervals. Visitors walk through one direction; the route exits onto a small viewing platform above the river. Free admission; modest donation expected at the entrance brazier.
