石割桜
360-year-old cherry tree that split a granite boulder, designated a Natural Monument in 1923.
A 360-year-old Edo-higan cherry tree that literally split a granite boulder as it grew, standing 10 meters tall in front of Morioka's district courthouse. Designated a National Natural Monument in 1923, the tree's roots grip the cracked stone like enormous fingers. Peak bloom in late April draws crowds, but early morning visits offer quiet contemplation of this botanical marvel.
