Ishiguro Samurai House

石黒家
The oldest and most authentic samurai residence in Kakunodate, still occupied by descendants of the original family who give personal tours.
While Kakunodate's samurai district attracts visitors to several preserved estates, the Ishiguro house is the oldest and the only one where descendants of the original samurai family still live and personally guide visitors. Built around 1809, the house retains its original structure including a kura storehouse with family heirlooms, a Meiji-era fire engine, and personal effects spanning 200 years. The intimate scale and family connection make this a far more moving experience than the larger, more touristed Aoyagi house.
Ask the family member guiding you about the portable fire engine in the storehouse. The story of how samurai families organized firefighting reveals a fascinating side of Edo-period daily life.
