Inuyama Castle & Castle Town
castle
犬山城・城下町
One of only twelve original Japanese castles, perched above the Kiso River with an intact Edo-era town below.
Inuyama Castle is Japan's oldest surviving wooden castle (1537), designated a National Treasure. The compact keep offers panoramic views of the Kiso River and surrounding mountains. Below, the preserved castle town features traditional merchant houses converted into cafes, dengaku (grilled tofu on sticks) shops, and craft stores. The castle's cherry blossom season is particularly stunning but far less crowded than Osaka or Himeji.
Walk down to the riverbank below the castle at sunset for the most iconic photo angle. The castle glows against the evening sky with the Kiso River in the foreground.
