Imaicho Town

Imaicho in Kashihara holds the largest preserved traditional townscape in Japan, with over 500 Edo-period merchant houses and storehouses lining its quiet streets. Originally established in the 16th century as a fortified town by followers of the Jodo Shinshu Buddhist sect, the buildings retain white plastered walls, latticed windows, and heavy wooden doors. Utility poles have been buried underground, keeping modern clutter out of sight. Several houses open as small museums, and a few have become cafes and craft shops. The town sees far fewer visitors than Nara's temple circuit, which means you can walk these streets at your own pace.
