Overview
Walk 1 km of 13-degree tunnels through 12 centuries of silver-mining history, open since 807.
Mined continuously from 807 to 1973, this former silver mine in Asago now opens 1 kilometer of underground galleries at a constant 13 degrees Celsius, with life-size dioramas depicting working conditions across twelve centuries. The mine funded samurai lords, the Meiji government's modernization, and early industrial machinery imported from France. Above ground, a museum displays ore samples, tools, and scale models of the extraction process.
