Ichi no Torii First Torii Gate

The first torii gate of Kasuga Taisha Shrine stands as an Important Cultural Property and a landmark at the shrine's main western entrance. Originally built during the Heian period, the current gate dates to 1638 and is one of the earliest torii to be painted vermilion. Its shape, with straight top lintels and slightly tapered pillars, originated here and became known as the Kasuga Torii style, now widely recognized across Japan. The gate marks the western start of the ancient Sanjo Road, which once connected Kasuga Taisha to Heijokyo, Japan's first permanent capital established in 710. It is a short walk from central Nara Park.
