法善寺横丁
Overview
Lantern-lit cobblestone alley behind Hōzen-ji Temple, lined with kappo restaurants and small bars.
An 80-meter cobblestone alley behind Hōzen-ji Temple in Namba, three meters wide, lit by paper lanterns after dark. Around 60 small kappo restaurants and bars line the lane, many in wooden buildings rebuilt after wartime fires. The alley appears in Sakunosuke Oda's 1940 novel Meoto Zenzai. The moss-covered Mizukake-Fudō statue at the temple, splashed with water by passersby for centuries, sits at the alley's east end. Works as a stop before or after dinner in Dotonbori.
Local tips
Splash water on the moss-covered Fudō statue at the alley's east end before walking through. The kappo restaurants take walk-ins early; reservations matter after 19:30.
