Overview
Legendary hillside onsen offering panoramic views of Mount Fuji and the Kofu Basin.
Rustic, hillside facility that has gained cult status for its incredible views. Bathers can soak in large outdoor stone pools while looking directly at Mount Fuji across the valley. The facility is split into two baths: 'Acchi-no-yu' (That Bath) and 'Kocchi-no-yu' (This Bath), with 'Acchi-no-yu' being newer and larger. The name 'Hottarakashi' translates to 'left alone,' reflecting its casual, unmanaged origins. It is a bare-bones operation with simple wooden structures, but it is one of the most popular day-trip destinations from Tokyo. It is famous for opening one hour before sunrise, allowing guests to soak while the sun comes up over Fuji. It is fully tattoo-friendly.
Local tips
Visit for sunrise to see Mount Fuji turn pink, or at night to see the 'starlit' lights of the Kofu Basin below. Try the 'Ontama-age' (deep-fried soft-boiled egg) from the snack stand.
