Overview

300-year-old traditional Japanese garden featuring manicured landscapes, seasonal flowers, and tranquil pond views.

Hori Gardens in Tsuwano is a traditional Japanese garden laid out roughly 300 years ago on a former lord's estate and maintained to the same design since. The central pond is surrounded by pruned pines, stone lanterns, and carefully positioned rocks in the composition typical of Edo-period strolling gardens. A tea house at one end serves matcha and seasonal sweets. The garden is small enough to walk in about twenty minutes but detailed enough to reward slower attention. Tsuwano is a well-preserved castle town with carp-filled canals, and the garden fits naturally into a longer day rather than standing alone.
