Homei Shijuhachi Falls
nature
鳳鳴四十八滝
A cascading series of waterfalls named for the phoenix-like sound of water echoing through a narrow gorge.
Located upstream along the Hirose River near Sakunami Onsen, these layered waterfalls tumble through a narrow ravine in multiple tiers. The name references the mythical phoenix (ho) whose song the cascading water is said to resemble. The surrounding forest is particularly stunning during autumn foliage season, and the viewing platform is rarely crowded even on weekends.
Visit early morning in late October when mist rises from the falls and the surrounding maples are at peak color. Bring a thermos, there are no vending machines nearby.
