Mars Tsunuki Distillery
本坊酒造 マルス津貫蒸溜所
Overview
Kagoshima distillery founded in 1872, producing whisky since 1949 with traditional generational techniques.
The original home of Mars whisky, founded in Tsunuki, Kagoshima in 1872, where production returned in 2016 after decades at distilleries in Yamanashi and Nagano. The local climate, with its sharp temperature variance, and pristine spring water contribute to award-winning results. Tours (reservation required) take you through the stills, equipment, and stone barrel warehouses, while an exhibit inside the historic distillation tower traces the company's history. The 1933 Hojo family residence now houses a bar serving exclusive Mars whiskies. A small Japanese garden completes the grounds.
Local tips
Japanese bars often have a table charge (otoshi). A small appetizer served automatically. It's normal, not a scam.
