Overview
Zen temple with 2,000 bamboo stalks and an in-grove matcha tea house, rivaling Arashiyama.
A Rinzai Zen temple in Kamakura famous for its bamboo grove of over 2,000 moso bamboo stalks. A traditional tea house within the grove serves matcha surrounded by towering bamboo, an intimate alternative to Kyoto's Arashiyama.
Local tips
The temple garden is best viewed from the tatami room, not the walkway. Remove shoes and sit at floor level for the intended perspective. Avoid weekends if possible. The Enoden train and hiking trails get very crowded with day-trippers from Tokyo.
