Hiyoshi Taisha

The head shrine of some 3,800 Hiyoshi shrines across Japan, at the foot of sacred Mount Hiei where monkeys are revered as divine messengers. The six-week Sanno Festival in spring features dramatic processions of massive portable shrines and theatrical performances. The shrine's vermillion structures amid ancient forests have protected the northeastern approaches to Kyoto for over 1,200 years.
