Hiyama Castle
castle
檜山城 - 二の丸・本丸・三の丸
Hiyama Castle occupies the summit of Mt. Kiriyama at 145 meters and was built in stages during the late fifteenth century by the Ando clan, who leveled large sections of the mountain to construct its earthen fortifications. The most dramatic episode in its history came in 1589, when a rival branch of the clan seized the castle and held out for 150 days. Defenders planted Siberian onion on the slopes to make the ground slippery for attackers and provide food for those inside. Archaeological excavations are still ongoing. From the inner enclosure at the summit, there is a sweeping view westward over Noshiro city to the Sea of Japan.
