Hitoyoshi castle town
landmark
Hidden castle town deep in southern Kumamoto, famous for kuma-shochu rice spirit distilleries and a 1,200-year-old shrine.
A castle town tucked into a Kumamoto valley along the Kuma River, known nationally for kuma-shochu, a regional rice-based distilled spirit. Aoi Aso Shrine, founded in 806, is one of three national-treasure shrine buildings in southern Kyushu. The blacksmith district preserves the working forges that supplied the surrounding feudal domain. Most of the town can be walked in a half-day; pair with a shochu distillery tour.
Sengetsu, Sentou, and Yamanota are the easiest distilleries for visitors. Aoi Aso Shrine's Hassakusai festival in early September is the year's photogenic peak.
