Ruined castle walls above the Kuma River gorge in Kyushu's 'Little Kyoto', a shochu and onsen town time forgot.

Hitoyoshi was isolated enough to develop its own culture as the 'Little Kyoto of Kyushu.' The castle ruins overlook the dramatic Kuma River gorge, and the town below has 28 shochu distilleries, onsen footbaths, and preserved samurai streets. Despite devastating 2020 floods, the town is rebuilding and welcoming visitors to support recovery.

Local tips

Visit a shochu distillery. Hitoyoshi has 28 and many offer free tastings. Sengetsu Distillery has the best tour. Follow with a free onsen footbath.
