A grid of Edo-period merchant streets preserved in the riverside town of Hita, nicknamed Kyushu's Little Kyoto. The Kuncho Sake Brewery Museum occupies a complex that produced sake from the Edo through Taisho eras and offers tastings of local brews. Wooden machiya storefronts sell geta clogs, regional confections, and Hita's distinctive cedar-craft products. The Mikuma River cormorant fishing runs from May to October.
