Overview

This map shows many of the historic sites related to tatara ironmaking in Okuizumo.

Okuizumo was the center of Japan's tatara ironmaking industry, and dozens of former furnace sites, iron-sand gathering locations, and proprietor residences are scattered across the region. Beginning in the 1700s, small movable furnaces were replaced by large permanent facilities surrounded by entire villages called sannai. The industry reshaped the physical landscape: mountains were leveled to extract iron sand, and the flattened land was later converted into terraced agricultural fields. A viewing platform near Ohara Shinden, on land once owned by the Itohara family, offers a clear look at this altered terrain. The pattern of former ironworks visible on maps of the region shows just how widespread the industry once was.
