Overview
Built in 1868 along the Wakasa Kaido trade road, this two-story merchant building was the hub of a major shipping operation that moved about 27,000 tons of cargo per year. Porters and horses could be hired here, and goods were loaded and dispatched onward to the next destination along the route to Kyoto. The wide facade with deep red and white walls, latticed windows, and a tiled roof still dominates the streetscape of Kumagawa-juku, a nationally designated Important Preservation District. Today the building hosts shared office space, lectures, pop-up shops, and community events, continuing to support local livelihoods in a different but recognizable form.
