Hishigata Pond
菱形池
Overview
In the center of the Usa Jingu shrine grounds is the picturesque Hishigata Pond.
In the center of Usa Jingu shrine grounds, Hishigata Pond connects small islands via bridges and hosts a noh stage used for an annual October performance. Wisteria, lotus, iris, and maples line the perimeter through the seasons, and koi carp, turtles, and waterfowl inhabit the water. On the southeast bank, the Goreisui spring is considered the spot where the deity Hachiman first appeared in 571, regarded as the beginning of Usa Jingu's history. The spring feeds three stone wells, and the water is used in religious offerings, though it is not for drinking. Small bags of fish food are available to purchase for feeding the carp.
