水の都、広島
Built on the delta of the Ota River and facing the Seto Inland Sea, Hiroshima has always been a city of water.
Hiroshima is built on the delta of the Ota River, and six channels divide the city center into five islets connected by over 80 bridges. The name itself means wide island. The city has been shaping its waterways since the Edo period through land reclamation, using tidal patterns in the Seto Inland Sea to build sea walls at low tide and fill them with soil. Since World War II, reconstruction planners deliberately placed parks and walkways along the riverbanks. Today riverside paths, cycling routes, and cafes that replaced old storehouses make the river a genuine part of daily city life rather than a working waterway.
