Hirano Shrine

平野神社
985 founding; the canonical Kyoto cherry blossom shrine with 400 trees of 60 varieties.
A shrine founded in 985 when the imperial court moved four protective deities from Nara to its new Kyoto capital. The grounds hold 400 cherry trees of 60 varieties, with successive blooming windows that stretch the cherry season here from late March into early May. The Sakura Festival on April 10 (the Oka Matsuri) dates back to 985, making it Kyoto's oldest cherry festival.
Bloom variety means the shrine has color longer than Maruyama or Heian; weekday early mornings during peak still feel uncrowded.
